A lock nut (10) threadably engageable and lockingly retainable about a threaded shaft (S) extending through a workpiece (W1,W2), has at least one deformable slot (30) disposed on a side portion (28) thereof and disposed transversely relative to the lock nut bore (22) axis. The lock nut also has a nut deforming member (40) protruding from a bottom end (28) thereof, wherein at least a portion of the nut deforming member (40) is in substantial axial alignment with the deformable slot (30). The lock nut (10) is undeformed prior to installation thereof about the threaded shaft (S). The nut deforming member (42) is engageable with the workpiece (W1,W2) to deform the lock nut (10) upon threadably installing the lock nut (10) about the threaded shaft (S), thereby retaining the lock nut (10) thereabout. The lock nut has a relatively consistent torque performance with reduced statistical spread over several installation and removal cycles of the nut (10) about the threaded shaft (S). The nut deforming member (40) may be an annular portion of a skirt (46) disposed peripherally on the bottom end (28) of the lock nut, which may have a substantially countersunk surface.
