PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high-density recording which achieves an endurance performance sufficiently for practical use by significantly improving an electromagnetic conversion characteristic, especially a high-density recording characteristic. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is provided with a substantially non-magnetic lower layer and a magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder sequentially on a support body. The magnetic layer has a (Hc) of 1,800 oersted(Oe) or more and an average surface roughness Ra of the center surface of 0.5-5.0 nm. The magnetic layer contains 1-5 wt.% of diamond fine particles with the average size of 0.10-1.0μm per the ferromagnetic powder.
