PRODUCTION OF 1BETA-METHYLCARBAPENEM COMPOUND

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply producing the subject compound useful as an intermediate forβ-lactam-based antibiotics by reacting a carbapenem derivative with iodobenzene dichloride and then with a base. SOLUTION: This method reacts with a compound shown by formula l (R<1> and R<2> are each a 1-4C alkyl; and TBDMSO is t-butyldimethylsilyloxy) with iodobenzene dichloride in the presence of pyridine and water to produce a compound shown by formula II, and then reacts the compound shown by formula II with a base to produce 1β-methylcarbapenem shown by formula III. The compound shown by formula III can be also obtained by reacting the compound shown by formula I with iodobenzene dichloride in the presence of water and an excessive quantity of pyridine. This method simply gives the compound shown by formula Ill while sterically controlling the methyl group at the 1-site.
