In an operational control system, a monitoring device is positionally aligned with a plurality of measuring and/or control chassis, each of which is connected to a measuring and/or control device to be controlled or monitored. The measuring and/or control chassis are positionally arranged so that they are able to communicate with each other and with the monitoring device in a sequential order. Specifically, in operation, command and data signals from the monitoring device are received and sequentially relayed by first pass-through circuits in each of the measuring and/or control chassis. Depending on the address data in the command and data signals and the address data assigned to each measuring and/or control chassis, the chassis will process the command and data signals, communicate with its corresponding measuring and/or control device, and then generate response data signals. Each measuring and/or control chassis will then transmit its response data signals through an adjacent measuring and/or control chassis earlier in the sequential order, whereby the response data signals will be relayed to the monitoring device.
