Disclosed is new use of certain resorcinol derivatives as skin lightening agents. The resorcinol derivatives have the formula: (see fig. I) where X is: (1) hydrogen; (2) OR1 wherein R1 represents hydrogen, (C1-C6)alkyl, aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl, or COR2 wherein R2 represents (C1-C6)alkyl, aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl or phenyl; (3) halogen; (4) (C1-C6)alkyl; (5) aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl; (6) SR3 wherein R3 represents hydrogen, (C1-C6)alkyl or aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl; or (7) NHR1 wherein R1 is as defined above; n is 0 to 3; and the dashed line represents an optional double bond.
