PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject testing agent capable of reducing the corporal load of a subject, having no adverse effects at all, safely and simply usable, capable of carrying out accurate examination high in correlation with phenylalanine hydroxylase activity in liver tissue. SOLUTION: Phenylalanine in which carbon at the 1-position is labeled with<13> C in an amount of 1-3 wt.% in the case of infection and about 10-100 wt.%, preferably 50-100 wt.% in the case of capsule, tablet, granule or dust and optionally a carrier are added to an injection, a capsule, etc., to give the objective testing agent. Phenylalanine hydroxylase activity can be known by measuring the concentration of<13> C in exhalation CO2 after the administration of the testing agent and from a previously formed calibration curve from the increase ratio (Δ<13> C (%)) of the concentration of<13> C in the exhalation CO2 after passage of a fixed time from the administration.
