Format information (FI) of a floppy disc is recorded in a servo region (SA) of an empty track outside a user data recording/reproducing region of the floppy disc. The format information (FI) is recorded in a gray code region (GA) within the servo region (SA) along with the track number (TN). The format of the floppy disc can be identified without making any identification hole or the like in the housing.
