The desalting apparatus comprises two cylindrical tubes or supply chambers which are alternatively pressurised with the osmosis membrane, said chambers or cylinders being connected at one end to the membrane inlet and at the other end to the brine outlet. The power saving with such a reverse osmosis system results from the fact that, by pressurising the membrane with the supply chamber at both sides, the circulation of water at high pressure does not require much power. A floating piston housed without friction in each chamber or cylinder actuates as a separation wall between the brine and the water to be desalted, magnets being provided to give their position through sensors placed outside the chambers, thereby controlling the volume of water displaced with the object to make the change of chamber. Additionally, there is provided a pressurisation prior to each cycle.
