The fuel cell device has at least two spiral wound fuel cells (1) connected together via a coupling element (2) inserted between them, contained within an outer cylindrical sleeve under pressure. Each fuel cell has two electrodes and an intermediate membrane and electrolyte layer, with a bipolar plate coupling element between the fuel cells and thin metal end plates (3) from which the current is obtained.
