The input device includes a transport path for the medium and/or envelope, and a width guidance (35) which adjusts a width of the transport path, if a medium input is selected, and leaves the transport path, if an envelope input is selected. Separating devices (24 to 28) are arranged adjacent to the transport path, and are movable in a direction, enlarging the width of the transport path, so that the envelope can run through the transport path when envelope input is selected. The input device alternatively receives at least one medium (40) or an envelope (43) containing a medium, and includes a transport path for the medium and/or envelope, and a width guidance (35) which is arranged in the transport path to limit the width of the path in case of one of both possibilities of medium input and envelope input. The width guidance adjusts a medium transport width in the transport path, if a medium input is selected, and leaves the transport path, if an envelope input is selected. Separating devices (24 to 28) are arranged adjacent to the transport path, and transport the at least one medium and/or envelope, whereby the separating devices are movable in a direction for enlarging the width of the transport path, so that the envelope can run through the transport path when the envelope input is selected.
