PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium where a recess controlled in depth can be formed at a surface of a substrate or an undercoat layer and which considerably reduces friction at the CSS(contact start and stop), eliminates sticking to a medium surface of a head, particularly exhibits superior CSS characteristics even at environmental tests under high temperatures, high moisture, and prevents a head crash or instability in a head space. SOLUTION: At least a magnetic layer and a protecting layer provided on the magnetic layer in some times are set on a non-magnetic substrate via an undercoat layer and an intermediate layer on the undercoat layer upon necessities. The thus-formed magnetic recording medium includes 10-10<8> recesses per 1 mm<2> of a CSS zone. The recess has an average roughness plane at the CSS zone lower than an average roughness plane at a data zone, and an area S on a medium surface of the recess is 0.25-100μm<2> . An average depth of the recesses is 1-30 nm.
