PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface sizing agent for coated paper, slight in tack in re-humidification, by preparing a dispersion of an alkali neutralized substance of a polymer obtained by polymerizing a specific hydrophobic monomer with a prescribed anionic monomer in the presence of a specified low-molecular surfactant. SOLUTION: A water dispersion of an alkali neutralized substance of a polymer obtained by subjecting one or more hydrophobic monomers selected from a styrene and a (meth)acrylate with one or more anionic monomers selected fromα,β-unsaturated monocarboxylic acids (half esters) to emulsion polymerization in the ratio of 40-80 mol.%/60-20 mol.% in the presence of a low-molecular surfactant of the formula (R is a 6-22C alkyl; X is an oxygen atom, methylene or ethylene; Y is H, an alkali metal, amine or ammonium; (p) and (q) are each an integer of 0-3 and p+q>=2) containing two or more groups selected from a sulfonic group and a sulfuric ester group in one molecule is prepared to give the objective surface sizing agent.
