PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a Fe-Ni alloy plate in good yield by subjecting an alloy slab consisting of a specified composition of Ni, Mn, S and the balance essen tially Fe to hot rolling after heating/holding under a specified condition so as to suppress generation of a surface defect of a spills, etc. SOLUTION: A composition of the alloy consists of, by weight, 20-45% Ni, 0.1-0.5% Mn, <=0.005% S and the balance essentially Fe. The Fe-Ni alloy of this composition is continuously cast to a slab, the slab is hot rolled after heated/held to 1280-1350 deg.C for >=30 min. By this method, decomposition of MnS in a sulfide and reforming of a solid solution of S intoγ-Fe are sufficiently progressed, segregation of S and Mn generated in solidification is eliminated, a homogeneous slab is produced. As a result, cooling before hot rolling is relatively rapid and a quantity of S to precipitate into a grain boundary is limited, accordingly, strength of the grain boundary is high, generation of a spills is prevented by metal flow in hot rolling.
