A Time Division Duplex (TDD) wireless system utilizes an identical TDD IC engine in both base station (37) and remote stations (39). In the base station (37) the clock input to the TDD IC is halted once in the middle of each time slice (59) to provide a central guard between transmit and receive portions (45) that determines the maximum range of the system. At the remote stations (39) clock halts (61) are programmed and utilized to provide guard bands (55) to position transmit (52) and receive (50) portions in each time slice to accomodate propagation delay based on separation of a remote station from the base station.
