The helmet restraint system (10) of the invention secures the helmet (12) of a driver (D) or passenger occupant of a vehicle (V), such as a race car, to the structural chassis, body (7) or frame (9) of the vehicle (V), independent of the shoulder harness or seatbelt. The system (10) reduces the potentially injurious forces to the neck and head during a high-deceleration event, particularly a frontal collision. The helmet restraint belt system (10) comprises a restraint belt assembly which spans between an anchor point on the vehicle chassis/body (7) and a belt receiving latch (11) mounted to the driver's helmet (12). The belt (13) is preferably retractable and pre-tensioned by means of a collision or inertially-lockable belt tensioner (14).
