PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved operating device for the occupant crash protection device of an automobile, enabling quicker determination on the time of collision regarding the operation of the occupant crash protection device and at the same time having the high accuracy required against operating errors. SOLUTION: An operating device for an occupant crash protection device 18 in an automobile, particularly for a side air bag, includes an acceleration sensor 13, an evaluation unit 12, and at least one ignition device 17, at least the acceleration sensor and the evaluation unit being mounted in a common housing 11 directly surrounding them. A transmission means 14 and a reception means 15 are further mounted in the housing 11, free space waves can be radiated and received by the means, and an object approaching the device can be detected on the basis of evaluation of received reflection signals by the means. The occupant crash protection device can be operated by the evaluation unit with respect to a measurement signal only as the function of a signal of the acceleration sensor provided in the housing in advance and the reflection signal evaluated. |
