PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for producing pigments, pharmaceutically active compounds and the like by hydrogenating a specific phenol compound in the presence of an alkali metal-containing palladium catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing a hydroxycyclohexanone compound of formula II comprises replacing a gas in a reaction system with an inactive gas and subsequently hydrogenating a substituted phenol compound of formula I [R is a 1-10C alkyl; (m) is 1,2; (n) is an integer of 0-3; (m)+(n) = an integer of 1-4] (especially catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone or pyrogallol) in the presence of (B) an alkali metal-containing palladium catalyst preferably carrying 1-10 wt.% of palladium and 0.5-5 wt.% of an alkali metal preferably in an amount of 0.5-10 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the component A preferably in (C) 100-500 pts.wt. of a 3-12C monovalent aliphatic saturated alcohol preferably at 70-150 deg.C. |
