PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new glass substrate for magnetic recording media and information recording media, high in Young's modulus and heat resistance, excellent in surface smoothness and surface uniformity, and high in mechanical strength. SOLUTION: This glass substrate consists of oxycarbonitride glass such as Li-Si-O-N-C-based, Na-Si-O-N-C-based, Mg-Si-Al-O-N-C-based, or Ca-Si-Al-O- N-C-based glass, being, for example, >=36×10<6> Nm/kg in specific elastic modulus, >=100 GPa in Young's modulus, <=8Åin surface roughness (Ra), and >=700 deg.C in glass transition temperature.
