The movement of the piston (6) limits variably a combustion and expansion chamber in the cylinder (2). An inlet (10) and an outlet (11) are connected to the cylinder. The inlet connects closer to the cylinder top dead centre than the outlet. A separate compression chamber (12) can be brought into connection via the inlet and a valve within it with the combustion and expansion chamber. The pressure build-up in the compression chamber is less than half a stroke of the piston and the control of the valve between the compression chamber and the combustion chamber is such that the valve just opens when the piston has begun its compression and combustion stroke again.
