The invention concerns an arrangement for damping of valve stroke in an internal combustion engine and control of valve functions. In the arrangement damping is produced of a powerful stroke between the valve and seat, which is caused by discharge of oil, said damping being based on an increase in the oil's flow resistance. The oil's flow path diminishes when the valve approaches its closed position and the end 48 of a piston 6 situated against the valve approaches a diameter change 18A of a cylinder 18 and its play 48A. How deeply into a cylinder of smaller diameter a control screw 4S on a rocker arm advances the end 48 of piston 6 under the pressure of the valve spring can be controlled with said control screw 4S. As feed device for oil the arrangement also has an output opening 20 which is closed by a piston 4 situated against the cam of a camshaft and outlet openings 13A, 11A, 11B which are opened by the piston 6 situated against the valve. When discharge is permitted through the first outlet opening, opening of the valve is delayed and the time adjustment is set later than when discharge is permitted through the last discharge opening, since closure of the valve then occurs sooner. In certain variants of the arrangement, it is possible by means of an open channel 16 to keep the valve's opening zone almost the same regardless of the control valve's 20D position.
