A rotary shaft monitoring seal system (10) includes a seal housing (14); a seal assembly (16) in the housing (14) for sealingly engaging a rotary shaft (20) to prevent fluid leakage between the shaft (20) and the housing (14); a monitoring port (46) in the housing (14); and a detector assembly (12) mounted in the port (46) for sensing conditions in the vicinity of the seal assembly (16).
