The system has a servo pump (16) to charge a pressure reservoir (17) and to draw brake fluid from the wheel brakes (11) for ABS control. Solenoid valves control the various fluid connections and a processor monitors the displacement of the brake pedal to generate a programmed braking action and a target stopping distance. The actual measured braking effect and retardation are compared with the programmed values for an active braking control.
