Process for reforming methanol comprises: (a) preparing an apparatus comprising an anode, cathode and proton-conducting electrolyte; (b) applying an electrical voltage between the anode and cathode; (c) feeding a mixture of methanol and oxygen-containing compound to the anode; and (d) reducing protons to H2 on the cathode side. The H2 produced is stored in a tank under pressure. Also claimed is the apparatus for carrying out the process.
