A collection vessel for waste to be sterilised in an autoclave comprises an opening (6) with a closure which is open during the sterilisation process. The closure consists of a material which melts at the autoclave operating temperature. The closure is preferably in the form of a cap (9) located on a collar (8) around the opening. The vessel and lid (2) preferably consist of polyethylene or polypropylene, and the closure consists of polystyrol.
