CONDUCTING POLYMER DRIVEN ROTARY MOTOR

A rotary actuator (30) for applying torque to a crank (2) with respect to a member (3). The rotary actuator (30) has a substantially planar sheet (1) of anisotropic conducting polymer, portions of which are activated in temporal sequence to produce rotation of the crank (2) with respect to the axis (32) of the crank (2). Actuation is achieved by contraction of successive portions of the sheet (1) as electrical current causes differential strain in the sheet (1).
