PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve utilization efficiency of light by using both components of p polarization and s polarization of natural light from a light source in a single plate system projection color liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: A light analytic means 23a is arranged in an optical path between the light source and a polarization plate 8. The light analytic means 23a is constituted so that a first polarized light separation color analyzing element 3, a second polarized light separation color analyzing element 4, a phase difference plate 5 and a mirror 12 are arranged along the advance direction of the light from the light source 1 sequentially from the light source 1 side in this order. The s polarization between the light from the light source 1 is analyzed to color light of three primary colors by the first polarized light separation color analyzing element 3, and the p polarization transmits through two polarized light separation color analyzing elements and the phase difference plate 5 to be reflected by the mirror 12, and transmits again through the phase difference plate 5 to be converted into the s polarization. The s polarization converted from the p polarization is analyzed to the color light of three primary colors by the second polarized light separation color analyzing element 4. The light from the light source 1 is unified to the s polarization, and there is no light reflected or absorbed by the polarizing plate 8. |
