PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element obtaining a bright display in the display element using a transmission polarizing axis variable optical element. SOLUTION: A TN liquid crystal 140 is used as the transmission polarizing axis variable optical element, and a polarizing plate 130 is provided on the upper side of the TN element 140, and a light scattering layer 150, a polarization separator 160 and a developed color layer 170 are provided on the lower side of the TN element 140, and further, light sources 190 eatable of emitting light are provided between the polarization separator 160 and the color developing layer 170. The polarization separator 160 transmits a linear polarization component of a first direction among the light made incident from the upside through, and reflects the linear polarization component of a second direction orthogonally intersecting with the first direction. The light reflected by the polarization separator 160 becomes white emission light 122 in a voltage non- applied part 120 under external light, and the light transmitting through the polarization separator 160 is color-developed by the color developing layer 170 to become colored emission light 112 in a voltage applied part 110. |
