In a photographic material with spectrally sensitized silver halide emulsion layer(s) and light-insensitive protective or spacer layer(s) on a base, at least one layer contains a squaric acid derivative of formula (I) or croconic acid derivative of formula (II); in which R = alk(en)yl, aryl, acyl or heterocyclyl.
