A method for folding and packing articles of clothing into bags and an apparatus comprising six zones, in the first of which zones the article of clothing to be folded is laid out; in the second two longitudinal folds are formed; in the third a first lower cross-fold is formed by means of a retractable device (30); in the fourth a second middle cross-fold is formed by pre-pressing by way of a blade (44); in the fifth the article of clothing is packed into the bag, and in the sixth the bag is finally closed by means of a closing device (60) and collected in a collecting container. In the second zone auxiliary belts (23, 25) are provided on the tilting plates (22, 24) to improve the longitudinal folds of the articles of clothing, the device (30) allowing to reduce the length of the apparatus, and the device (60) providing a perfect closure of the bag flap. <IMAGE>
