A hidden storage system is incorporated in the bed (163) of a vehicle (160) which includes wheel wells and fender/side panels (164), without altering the bed's external appearance for reducing attraction for theft. The storage system includes collapsible support beams (165) mounted beneath the bed (163), storage boxes (22, 23) located adjacent the wheel wells, the fender/side panels (164) as outer panels of the storage boxes (22, 23), hinges (30) to open and close the fender/side panels (164), and heated and/or insulated struts (150) for holding the fender/side panels (164) open. A fabrication method includes assembling components to form modules (191, 193, 194, 195) of the bed (190), and assembling the modules and the collapsible support beams (192) to form the bed (190) having the hidden storage system. |
