PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a device by mounting a projecting member in a housing member of a hydraulic valve timing device which changes the switching timing of the intake and exhaust valves, providing a rotor with a recessed part engageable with the projecting member and sliding the projecting member to release the engagement with the recessed part. SOLUTION: When an oil pump is operated, the oil pressure is supplied to a lag hydraulic chamber 31 through a control valve, and a slide plate 40 is moved to an advance hydraulic chamber 32 side. On this occasion, the lag hydraulic chamber 31 and a plunger oil passage 25 are communicated, the plunger 23 is pressed by the oil, pressure to be moved right, and the engagement of the plunger 23 and a rotor 20 is released. Then when an oil control valve is switched, and the oil pressure is added to the advance hydraulic chamber 32 through a first oil passage 7, the slide plate 40 is pressed by the oil pressure, and is moved to the lag hydraulic chamber 31 side. Whereby the plunger 23 is moved to right, the engagement with the holder 21 is released, and the rotation of the rotor 20 is advanced/lagged corresponding to the oil pressure.
