A rare earth based permanent magnet having a corrosion resistant surface comprising a magnetic body having an external surface formed from at least one rare earth metal alloy and a high temperature passivated layer substantially surrounding the external surface of the magnetic body. A method for passivating a neodymium based rare earth magnet through high temperature thermal conditioning in a controlled atmosphere environment.
