The machine has a guide frame moved forward in the working direction for a sprocket-driven endless cutter chain to which cutter bodies are fixed at intervals. The cutter bodies (26) work against the face for the full height of the seam, each being fitted with chisels (29) one above the other. The chisels have hooked portions by which they fit round guide rails (11,17), and are coupled by the hooks (30) to the cutter chain (14) behind the rails. The chisels can initially cut recesses (27) both at roof- and floor-level, while additional tools (36) set back from them then cut away the portion (28) of the face between the recesses.
