The adaptometer has a dark chamber (17) containing a light source (24-30) and a detection signal transducer (48). The dark chamber is the interior of an arrangement mounted on the patient's head. There is a housing provided for enclosing the eye (18) under investigation. The arrangement can be in the form of spectacles or a helmet.
