Operating method for electromagnetic actuator on piston engine

The method for a gas exchange valve on a piston engine, involves exciting the two solenoids depending upon a working stroke specified from an engine control unit. Between the solenoids, is an armature connected to the valve which moves against the force of an opening spring into the closed position and the force of a closing spring into the open position. For the normal lift of the valve, the armature is held by the springs at the same distance from the solenoids. To reduce the valve lift in operation, the pre-tension of one of the two springs, preferably the opening one, can be changed by an adjusting device which is controlled by the engine control unit.
