A system and method for concentrating the intensity of light emitted by a high-intensity source (30) for delivery to a remote target, so that the power density of the active radiating region of the source (30) is nearly restored at the target. The source (30) is surrounded by a plurality of nonimaging concentrators (4). If the source (30) is elongated, the concentrators (34) are similarly elongated and parallel to the source (30). If the source (30) is compact, the preferred geometric pattern of the concentrators (34) is dodecahedral. The geometry of the concentrators (34) is designed in accordance with edge-ray principle of nonimaging optics. Channels such as optical fiber or light pipes are coupled optically to the absorbers (40) of the concentrators (34) to conduct the concentrated light to the remote target.
