PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the magnetic record medium which is remarkably improved in electromagnetic conversion characteristics, especially the high density recording characteristic, and the error rate in a high density recording region and has the superior durability. SOLUTION: The medium is provide with the lower layer which is practically non-magnetic and arranged on a supporting body, and the magnetic layer which is made by distributing ferromagnetic metallic fine powder or ferromagnetic hexagonal crystal ferritic fine powder in binder, in the order. Relating to the medium, the following conditions are met, i.e., the surface recording density of the medium is set to 0.2 to 2 Gbit/inch<2> , the dry thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.05 to 0.25μm,Φm is set to 8.0×10<-3> to 1.0×10<-3> emu/cm<2> , the coercive force of the magnetic layer is more than 1800 Oe and a ratio (IL/IS) is set smaller than 1.5 where IL is the spatial frequency strength of long wavelengths of 10 to 2μm of the surface roughness of the magnetic layer and IS is the spatial frequency strength of short wavelengths of 1 to 0.5μm of the surface roughness of the magnetic layer.
