A measuring device having a housing (130) and an elongated member (10) disposed therein that can be extended and retracted through an opening (140) in the housing (130). The elongated member (10) is marked along each of its longitudinal edges (20, 30) in a linear scale (50, 60) with 2 sets of corresponding graduated numerical indicia (70, 80). The sets of numerical indicia (70, 80) begin at the first end (40) of the elongated member (10). The second set (80) of numerical indicia is inverted with respect to the first set (70) of numerical indicia.
