The splint, made from a relatively rigid plastic material e.g. with a foam lining, consists of leg (2) and foot (3) sections which are articulated relative to one another about an axis (4) passing through apertures (6, 7) in their connecting portions and approximately in line with the axes of the patient's malleoli. The articulated joint between the leg and foot sections of the splint is centred on the apertures (6, 7), which are of a size and position determined by the morphology of the individual patient. The diameter of the apertures it at least 45 mm and preferably 44 - 55 mm. In addition, the splint has a cut-away portion at the back to leave the Achilles tendon free.
