A firearm has a hammer (26) and a trigger (20). The trigger abuts the lower end of a safety (60), and one or more springs (52) urge the hammer down and constantly bias the safety towards a safe range. When the hammer (26) is down, a nose (54) on the hammer extends into a gap (70) while lugs (48) on the hammer engage abutment surfaces (78) of the safety and prevent the latter from moving to its safe range. Partial cocking of the hammer causes the release of the safety which is thereupon urged into such range. Further coking of the hammer causes the lugs (48) to become disengaged from shoulders (76) and the nose (54) to release the sear (94). If the trigger (20) is pulled, it forces the safety out of its safe range and the safety, in turn, moves the sear out of engagement with the hammer.
