The slideway lining (3) of the press comprises a main centre section (12), and at least one pair of edge strip sections (13) layed symmetrically to the lining centre. Transition sections (14) are provided between the main and edge strip sections, and if necessary, between adjacent edge strip sections. The transition sections are formed without any slots or with blind slots (16) serving neither as inlet nor drain for sliding medium.
