Safety hinge for vehicle seat

The hinge for the back of the seat is fitted with an additional locking mechanism which is activated by a collision or inertial sensor and which is activated by a servo drive to lock the hinge action. A servo driven locking bolt (15), fitted to one part of the hinge, is driven into a rack (13) on the other part of the hinge to lock the hinge in any setting of the seat back. The servo drive can be a solenoid with a direct drive from the collision or inertial sensing circuit. The inertial sensor is mounted in another part of the vehicle and is part of an overall collision protection system.
