The prepn. of organosilanes in one step comprises contacting Mg metal with a mixt. of an organic halide of formula R1X (I), a halosilane of formula R2aHbSiX4-a-b (II) and a co-solvent comprising (a) 1-15 moles of a dialkyl ether having less than 7C per mole organic halide and (b) 0.05-2 moles of a liq. aromatic hydrocarbon solvent per mole dialkyl ether, at 5-200 [deg]C. In formulae, R1 and R2 = 1-12C hydrocarbon; a, b and a+b = 0-3; and X = Cl or Br. Pref. the Mg metal is in the form of shavings and is contacted with the mixt. by directing a continuous flow of the mixt. through a bed of the Mg metal in an inert environment. The mole ratio of dialkyl ether to organic halide is 3-10, the mole ratio of liq. hydrocarbon solvent to dialkyl ether is 0.2-1.5, and the mole ratio of organic halide to halosilane is 0.1-10 (0.8-2). The process is run as a continuous process at 30-170[deg]C and 0-125 psig. The dialkyl ether is diethyl ether. The liq. aromatic hydrocarbon solvent is xylene, benzene and partic. toluene. The organic halide is allyl chloride. The halosilane is selected from trimethylchlorosilane, dimethylchlorosilane, methyldichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane. The inert atmosphere is N2. |
