The staple fibre-reinforced plastic material contains 5-60, pref. 10-50, esp. 18-50 wt.% staple fibres with a length of min. 100 times their dia. but less than 508 mm, a decitex value of 20-1200 and a tensile strength of over 5 g/decitex. The length of the fibres pref. is such that tensile failure of the material takes place due to fibre failure. For conveyor belts, mounting units and vehicle bumpers. Much less staple fibre reinforcement than usual is needed to reduce the extensibility of the material without reducing its tensile strength. The tear strength and clip-holding strength are also improved, the latter being very important in the construction of conveyor belts which are clipped together at the ends. The plastic material is a polymer which is plastic (can be folded or moulded) at room temp., e.g. vulcanized natural and synthetic rubber and plasticised polymers such as PVC. Any polymer fibres, e.g. of acrylic and polyolefins polymers can be used but polyamides and polyesters are esp. suitable. |
