Certain anionic surfactants are used to enhance antimicrobial effectiveness in comfortable, sustained release ophthalmic compositions containing polyelectrolytes, such as carboxyvinyl polymers, polystyrene sulfonic acid polym ers and cationic exchange resins, as well as at least one active ingredient.
