#The optical observation instrument has a first picture stabiliser (12) to stabilise the picture in a first direction. The instrument may also have a second picture stabiliser (13) to stabilise the picture in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. A first controller is used to manually control the first picture stabiliser. A second controller is used to control the second picture stabiliser manually and independently from the first controller. Preferably, the first direction is horizontal and the second direction is vertical. Each picture stabiliser comprises a vertically or horizontally movable lens mount (12a,13a) with a compensation lens group (16a,16b,18a,18b) on the optical axis or axis of the telescope or binoculars.
