A computer based system and method utilizing speech recognition technology for automatically providing financial information to a client without requiring a service representative and enabling a client to easily and efficiently provide information to the financial service provider. The system includes a speech processor (103) that receives a speech signal spoken by a user into a telephone (101) and identifies the term spoken by the user by comparing the received signal with a stored predefined vocabulary (112). The speech applications (130) interpret the recognized term and perform a requested financial service transaction and provide information to the user regarding this transaction via the telephone system (101), for example.
