When bit streams consisting of a number of information words are switched through in the switching networks of digital communication systems, bit corruption occurs. By correcting these bit errors, only the information word correctly switched through is forwarded to the end subscriber after the switching-through when the switching network halves are constructed in duplicate and are switched to be active in each case. The fact whether an information word has been correctly switched through is determined by means of a combined parity bit check and a bit-by-bit comparison with the information word switched through in parallel after the switching-through has taken place. It must also be ensured that bit corruption by the units (latches) involved in the switching-through process is also discovered and corrected.
