PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoxy compd. which gives the major component of an adhesive which cures rapidly and exhibits high strengths and flexibility by selecting an epoxy compd. which contains a medium-length main oligomer chain comprising repeating alkylene or alkyleneoxy units and has arom. parts at only the molecular terminals and two or less hydroxyl groups. SOLUTION: The objective compd. is a flexible epoxy compd. having a total chlorine content of lower than 0.1 wt.% and a structure represented by the formula (R<1> is H, 1-18C alkyl, 1-5C alkoxy, aryl, alkaryl, 1-5C perfluoroalkyl, or 1-5C acyl; n is 1-3; and when q is 1-6, then the flexible chain is CH2 CH2 CH2 CH2 O and when q is 3-10, the flexible chain is CH2 CH2 O). To prevent the ionic contamination of the compd., it is prepd. by a synthetic method which does not use epichlorohydrin. The compd. is liq. at room temp., has a neat resin viscosity of 25,000 cP or lower at 25 deg.C, and, when cured, exhibits a glass transition point of 150 deg.C or lower and an elastic modulus of 2.0 MPa or lower. |
