Electrolytic sensors, for detecting and measuring concentrations of minor polyvalent elements in metallurgical melts, have two electrodes separated by an oxidic solid electrolyte matrix, on which is deposited a compound of the element to be measured and an element which is mobile in the matrix. A preferred electrolyte matrix is .beta.-alumina, and preferred deposition compounds are phosphates, sulphates and silicates of the alkali or alkaline earth metals.
